Histology is the study of the microscopic structure of tissues, focusing on the organization and appearance of cells within their extracellular environment. The term histologisesti, or histologically in English, describes observations or findings made on tissue sections rather than on gross anatomy or imaging. The field encompasses normal tissue architecture, development, and function, as well as disease-related changes examined through histopathology.

A typical histological workflow begins with tissue collection, fixation, and processing. Samples are fixed to preserve structure, embedded in paraffin, and cut into thin sections (often 3–5 micrometers). Sections are mounted on slides and stained to reveal cellular and extracellular components. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) is the most common stain, providing general contrast between nuclei and cytoplasm. Special stains (such as PAS or Masson's trichrome) and immunohistochemistry are used to highlight specific cell types, connective tissue, or molecular markers. Modern practice increasingly employs digital pathology and whole-slide imaging for analysis and consultation.

Interpretation relies on light microscopy to assess tissue architecture, cellular morphology, and staining patterns. Histology is essential in diagnosing diseases, determining prognosis, and guiding treatment in fields such as pathology, oncology, and gastroenterology. Observations are integrated with clinical data, imaging studies, and molecular tests. Artifacts from fixation, processing, or sectioning can affect interpretation and must be recognized.

Histology serves both clinical and research purposes, underpinning education and the understanding of normal physiology and pathology. Ongoing advances include quantitative histology, advanced immunohistochemical panels, and digital or automated analysis to enhance diagnostic precision and reproducibility.
