Hiigellainete, a term derived from Estonian, translates to "gigantic waves" or "huge waves." It refers to exceptionally large and powerful ocean waves that can pose significant threats to maritime activities and coastal areas. These waves are not to be confused with typical storm waves, as they are formed by distinct mechanisms and can reach much greater heights.

The formation of hiigellainete is often attributed to complex oceanic phenomena.
