It is sometimes interpreted as an aspirational level that organizations strive toward by applying systematic design, testing, and continuous improvement practices.

Common characteristics associated with highrequality include low defect density, high reliability (low failure rate), robust usability, maintainability, and measurable performance under diverse conditions. Metrics frequently invoked include defect rate, mean time between failures (MTBF), mean time to repair (MTTR), customer satisfaction (CSAT) or net promoter score (NPS), and process capability indices.
