Highgamut

Highgamut is a term used in color science and imaging to describe color spaces, devices, or workflows that support a broad color gamut—a larger portion of the visible spectrum—compared with standard reference spaces. The term is descriptive rather than a formal specification and is commonly applied in photography, digital cinema, display technology, and printing to indicate capability beyond common gamuts such as sRGB or Rec. 709.

In practice, highgamut systems can reproduce more saturated colors, particularly in greens, cyans, and certain skin tones, depending on lighting and context. The size of a device’s gamut is typically defined relative to a standard reference color space and measured in terms of chromaticity coverage on the CIE 1931 diagram or by the triangle area formed by the device’s primaries.

Applications include high-end photography, color-critical video production, HDR displays, and professional printing, where a wider gamut can preserve more color information from capture to output. Color management is essential when using highgamut content, because different devices can reproduce different portions of the spectrum. Gamut mapping and ICC profiles help translate colors between systems to minimize hue shifts and posterization.
