Hibernálás

Hibernálás, commonly known as hibernation, is a state of prolonged inactivity that some animals enter during winter months. This biological process allows animals to conserve energy and survive periods of cold weather and scarcity of food. During hibernation, an animal's body temperature, heart rate, and breathing rate all decrease significantly. These physiological changes reduce the metabolic rate, meaning the animal uses much less energy than it would when active.

Animals that hibernate include a variety of mammals such as bears, ground squirrels, bats, and hedgehogs, as well as some reptiles and amphibians. The duration of hibernation can vary greatly depending on the species and environmental conditions, ranging from a few weeks to several months. Before entering hibernation, animals typically build up fat reserves by consuming large amounts of food. They also prepare a safe den or burrow to protect themselves from the elements and predators.

While hibernating, animals are not completely unconscious but are in a state of reduced responsiveness. They may periodically wake up for short periods, often to eliminate waste, but then quickly return to their torpor. The trigger for hibernation is usually a combination of decreasing temperatures and shorter daylight hours. The end of hibernation is often signaled by rising temperatures and the availability of food sources in the spring. This remarkable adaptation is crucial for the survival of many species in environments with harsh winters.
