Heterogamy
Heterogamy refers to a mating system in which individuals choose mates who are different from themselves in one or more traits. This is in contrast to homogamy, where individuals tend to mate with those who are similar to them. Heterogamy can occur at various levels, from genetic differences to phenotypic traits. In biology, it is often studied in the context of sexual selection, where differences in mate choice can influence the genetic makeup of a population over time. For example, if individuals with certain desirable traits are preferred as mates, heterogamy can lead to the amplification of those traits in subsequent generations.
The concept of heterogamy is not limited to biology. It is also used in sociology and anthropology
