Heterodontus

Heterodontus is a genus of sharks commonly known as bullhead sharks or horn sharks. These sharks are characterized by their stout bodies, blunt heads, and prominent, spine-bearing dorsal fins. They are oviparous, meaning they lay eggs, which are typically spiral-shaped and deposited in crevices.

There are several recognized species within the Heterodontus genus, found in temperate and tropical waters of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. These sharks are generally bottom-dwellers, often found on sandy or rocky substrates. Their diet consists mainly of small invertebrates such as crustaceans, mollusks, and sea urchins, which they crush with their specialized teeth. Heterodontus sharks possess two distinct sets of teeth: sharp, pointed teeth at the front of their jaws for grasping prey, and blunt, molar-like teeth at the back for grinding.

Bullhead sharks are relatively small, with most species reaching lengths of less than one meter. They are not considered dangerous to humans, exhibiting a placid temperament. Their unique morphology and feeding adaptations make them an interesting subject for marine biology studies.
