Herisau

Herisau is a municipality and the capital of the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden in northeastern Switzerland. It functions as the canton's administrative center and an economic and cultural hub for the region. The town has a population of around 17,000 and covers about 12 square kilometers.

Geography and setting: Herisau lies in the Appenzell region on the northern edge of the Alpstein foothills, near the St. Gallen metropolitan area.
