Hengitysyteet, also known as respiratory syncytial virus or RSV, is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms. However, it can be serious, especially for infants and older adults.

Most people infected with RSV get over it in a week or two. But even a mild case of RSV can be serious for some, leading to hospitalization. RSV is the most common cause of bronchiolitis (inflammation of the small airways in the lung) and pneumonia in children younger than one year of age.

Symptoms of RSV typically appear in stages. Early symptoms are often mild and resemble a common cold, including a runny nose, decreased appetite, coughing, sneezing, and fever. A few days later, coughing may become more severe, and wheezing may develop.

For most people, RSV infection resolves on its own without specific treatment. Care often involves managing symptoms, such as using fever reducers, encouraging fluid intake, and rest. In more severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary for supportive care, including oxygen therapy or mechanical ventilation. There is no specific antiviral medication for RSV.

RSV is highly contagious and spreads through droplets released into the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can also spread by touching a surface or object contaminated with the virus and then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Frequent handwashing, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and cleaning frequently touched surfaces can help prevent the spread of RSV.
