Hengitystietukos refers to a blockage in the airway that obstructs the passage of air into and out of the lungs. This can occur in the upper or lower respiratory tract and can range from partial to complete obstruction. Causes are diverse and can include foreign objects, swelling due to allergic reactions or infections, mucus buildup, trauma, or growths within the airways.

Symptoms of a partial obstruction may include noisy breathing such as wheezing or stridor, coughing, and a feeling of breathlessness. A complete obstruction is a medical emergency characterized by the inability to breathe, speak, or cough effectively, often leading to cyanosis (a bluish discoloration of the skin) and loss of consciousness. Immediate intervention is crucial to restore airflow and prevent serious complications or death.

Diagnosis involves assessing the patient's breathing and appearance, and may include physical examination of the throat and airways. Treatment depends on the cause and severity of the obstruction. For foreign objects, methods like the Heimlich maneuver or manual removal may be employed. Swelling can be managed with medications like corticosteroids or antihistamines, while severe cases may require intubation or surgical intervention to clear the airway. Preventive measures include supervising young children to avoid choking hazards and prompt treatment of conditions that can lead to airway swelling or mucus production.
