Hengitysnopeudella

Hengitysnopeudella is a Finnish term used mainly in Finnish-language texts to describe something that occurs at a specific breathing rate. It is formed from hengitys (breathing) and nopeus (speed) with the adessive suffix -lla, which marks "with/at" a certain condition. In everyday language as well as in physiology, hengitysnopeus translates to respiratory rate, the number of breaths taken per minute.

The respiratory rate is a fundamental vital sign in humans and animals. At rest, healthy adults typically breathe 12–20 times per minute; children have higher rates, and rates can rise with exercise, fever, stress, or illness. When a procedure or experiment is described as being performed "hengitysnopeudella," it implies that ventilation is controlled or specified according to a chosen rate.

Measurement is usually done by counting breaths for a set period (commonly 30 or 60 seconds) and extrapolating to breaths per minute, though modern equipment such as capnographs and impedance pneumography can monitor respiratory rate continuously. The concept is important in anesthesiology, critical care, pulmonology, and pharmacology, where drug effects, gas exchange, or ventilation-perfusion relationships may depend on the breathing rate.
