The technique involves introducing helium into the system being tested and then using a specialized detector, typically a mass spectrometer, to sense its presence on the exterior.

The helium leak detection process generally begins with evacuating the volume to be tested. Helium is then introduced into the sealed volume or applied to the exterior of potential leak sites. A helium-sensitive detector, such as a helium mass spectrometer, is then used to scan the exterior surfaces of the system. When helium escapes through a leak, it is drawn into the detector, where its presence is registered. The intensity of the helium signal is proportional to the size of the leak. This method is highly sensitive and can detect leaks of very small volumes, often measured in units like standard cubic centimeters per second (scc/sec) or millibar liters per second (mbar·l/s).
