The term translates to "healer practitioner" or "non-medical practitioner." Heilpraktikers are not physicians and do not hold a medical degree. Instead, they undergo specific training and must pass an examination administered by the German authorities to obtain a license to practice. This examination focuses on general medical knowledge, diagnostic skills, and the specific therapeutic methods they intend to employ.

The scope of practice for Heilpraktikers is broad and can encompass a wide range of healing arts, including homeopathy, herbal medicine, acupuncture, naturopathy, and various forms of bodywork. They are permitted to diagnose and treat illnesses, prescribe remedies, and perform minor procedures. However, their practice is subject to certain restrictions, such as not being allowed to perform surgeries or prescribe conventional pharmaceutical drugs that require a physician's prescription.
