HbA1c értékkel refers to the measurement of glycated hemoglobin, commonly known as HbA1c, in a blood sample. This value provides an estimate of a person's average blood glucose levels over the preceding two to three months. It is a crucial diagnostic and monitoring tool for diabetes.

The HbA1c test works by measuring the percentage of hemoglobin in red blood cells that has glucose attached to it. Hemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen. When blood glucose levels are high, glucose binds to hemoglobin. The higher the blood sugar, the more glucose attaches. Since red blood cells have a lifespan of about 120 days, the HbA1c test reflects the average glucose exposure during that period.

A normal HbA1c level is typically below 5.7%. Levels between 5.7% and 6.4% indicate prediabetes, a condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be classified as type 2 diabetes. An HbA1c of 6.5% or higher on two separate tests usually signifies a diagnosis of diabetes. For individuals already diagnosed with diabetes, the target HbA1c level is often below 7%, though this can vary based on individual factors and medical advice. Regular monitoring of HbA1c levels helps healthcare providers assess the effectiveness of diabetes treatment and make necessary adjustments to medications or lifestyle interventions to prevent long-term complications.
