Határértékproblémákkal, or boundary value problems (BVPs), are a class of differential equations that involve an equation, a dependent variable, and its independent variable, with conditions specified at the endpoints or boundaries of the independent variable's domain. This contrasts with initial value problems (IVPs), where conditions are specified at a single point, typically the starting point of the independent variable.

In a typical boundary value problem, a differential equation must be solved, but instead of providing values for the dependent variable and its derivatives at a single point, these values are given at two or more distinct points. For example, in a second-order ordinary differential equation, one might specify the value of the dependent variable at both the beginning and the end of an interval.

Boundary value problems arise in various fields of science and engineering. They are commonly used to model physical phenomena where conditions are defined at the spatial boundaries of a system. Examples include the deflection of a beam supported at both ends, the temperature distribution in a rod with fixed temperatures at its extremities, or the steady-state flow of a fluid in a pipe.

Solving boundary value problems can be more complex than solving initial value problems. Analytical solutions are not always feasible, and numerical methods are often employed. Techniques such as finite difference methods, finite element methods, and shooting methods are widely used to approximate the solutions to BVPs. The existence and uniqueness of solutions for BVPs depend on the specific differential equation and the boundary conditions.
