Határállapotok, often translated as boundary conditions, are essential constraints applied to the solution of differential equations. These conditions specify the value of the solution or its derivatives at the boundaries of the domain over which the equation is being solved. Without appropriate boundary conditions, a differential equation may have infinitely many possible solutions, making it impossible to determine a unique physical or mathematical answer.

There are several common types of boundary conditions. Dirichlet boundary conditions, also known as essential boundary conditions, specify the value of the solution itself at the boundary. For example, in a heat conduction problem, a Dirichlet condition might state that the temperature at a specific point on the boundary is fixed at a certain value. Neumann boundary conditions, also known as natural boundary conditions, specify the value of the derivative of the solution at the boundary. In the heat conduction example, a Neumann condition could define the heat flux across the boundary, which is proportional to the temperature gradient. Mixed boundary conditions, also called Robin boundary conditions, involve a combination of the solution's value and its derivative.

The choice of boundary conditions is crucial as it dictates the specific physical or mathematical scenario being modeled. They are fundamental in fields such as physics, engineering, and applied mathematics, where they enable the formulation of well-posed problems that yield unique and physically meaningful results. The application of boundary conditions is a standard procedure in numerical methods used to solve differential equations, such as the finite element method or the finite difference method.
