Dirichlet

Dirichlet refers primarily to Johann Peter Gustav Lejeune Dirichlet (1805–1859), a German mathematician whose work laid foundational contributions to analysis, number theory, and potential theory. His name is attached to a number of theorems, principles, and objects across mathematics.

One of his early contributions is Dirichlet's principle, also called the pigeonhole principle, a simple counting argument used to prove existence results. In probability and statistics, the Dirichlet distribution is a multivariate generalization of the beta distribution, used as a conjugate prior for multinomial models. The Dirichlet process is a stochastic process used in Bayesian nonparametrics, named by analogy to the Dirichlet distribution. Other concepts bearing his name include Dirichlet convolution, Dirichlet boundary value problems, and Dirichlet’s test for convergence of series, which provides convergence criteria for certain series.
