Hasiköhögési

Hasiköhögési is a term originating from Estonian, translating roughly to "barking cough." It is not a specific medical diagnosis but rather a descriptive term used to characterize a particular type of cough. This cough is often dry and harsh, resembling the sound of a dog's bark.

The barking cough is commonly associated with conditions affecting the upper respiratory tract, particularly the larynx (voice box) and trachea (windpipe). Inflammation or swelling in these areas can narrow the airway, leading to the characteristic sound. Common causes include viral infections, such as croup (laryngotracheobronchitis) in children, which is a frequent culprit for this type of cough. Other potential causes can include epiglottitis, although this is less common and more serious. In some instances, irritants in the environment or allergic reactions might also trigger a barking cough.

The sound of a hasiköhögési can be concerning, especially for parents of young children. While often indicative of a viral illness that will resolve on its own, it is important to monitor for signs of respiratory distress, such as difficulty breathing, rapid breathing, or a bluish discoloration of the lips or skin.
