Hardwareidentifizierung, also known as hardware identification, is the process of recognizing and distinguishing individual hardware components within a computer system. This process is crucial for the operating system and various software applications to interact correctly with the underlying hardware. When a new device is connected or the system boots, the hardware identification mechanism comes into play.

The primary method for hardware identification involves unique identifiers assigned to each piece of hardware. These identifiers can include Vendor IDs (VIDs) and Product IDs (PIDs) for peripherals, serial numbers for specific components, or MAC addresses for network interfaces. The system's firmware, such as the BIOS or UEFI, plays a role in enumerating and identifying the hardware during the boot sequence. For plug-and-play devices, the operating system queries these identifiers and then loads the appropriate drivers.

Without effective hardware identification, the operating system would not know which drivers to load, how to communicate with the device, or how to manage system resources. This can lead to a non-functional system or poorly performing hardware. Various tools and utilities are available to users and system administrators to view and manage hardware identification information, aiding in troubleshooting and system management.
