Hardveraktiválás, often translated as hardware activation, is a process used by software developers to verify that a specific copy of their software is running on legitimate hardware and not being illegally copied or shared. This process typically involves the software generating a unique identifier based on certain hardware components of the computer. This identifier is then sent to the software vendor, who uses it to create a license key or activation code specific to that hardware configuration.

When the user installs the software, they are prompted to enter this license key. The software then compares the generated hardware identifier with the one associated with the provided license key. If they match, the software is considered activated and fully functional. If they don't match, or if the software detects that it's running on significantly different hardware than what it was originally activated on, it may cease to function or operate in a limited capacity.

The purpose of hardveraktiválás is to combat software piracy and ensure that each user has purchased a valid license for the software they are using. While it can be effective, it can also sometimes cause inconvenience for legitimate users, especially if they upgrade or replace significant hardware components, which might require re-activation or even purchasing a new license.
