Hardsetting

Hardsetting refers to a soil condition where the soil surface dries and forms a dense, impenetrable layer. This occurs when soil particles, particularly clay and silt, are dispersed and then re-aggregate upon drying, creating a crust. This crust can significantly impede water infiltration, reducing the amount of water that penetrates the soil profile and is available for plant roots. It also restricts air movement, which can be detrimental to soil organisms and plant respiration.

The formation of hardsetting soils is often exacerbated by specific soil properties and management practices. Soils with a high proportion of silt and clay, and low organic matter content, are more prone to hardsetting. Activities that disturb the soil structure, such as tillage, especially under wet conditions, can break down soil aggregates and make them more susceptible to dispersion and subsequent crusting. Compaction, whether from machinery or livestock, can also contribute by reducing pore space and increasing the density of the soil.

The consequences of hardsetting include reduced seedling emergence, as the crust prevents young plants from pushing through to the surface. Waterlogging can occur above the hardsetting layer due to poor infiltration, leading to anaerobic conditions. Erosion can also be increased, as water runs off the surface rather than soaking in. Management strategies to mitigate hardsetting often focus on improving soil structure and increasing organic matter. Practices such as reduced tillage, cover cropping, and the addition of organic amendments can help to maintain stable soil aggregates, resist dispersion, and enhance water infiltration.
