Hapjes

Hapjes are small savoury bites served as appetizers or snacks, common in Dutch-speaking regions such as the Netherlands and Flanders. They are typically served at parties, receptions, or during a borrel (drinks gathering). Hapjes can be cold or warm and are designed for easy sharing, often presented on trays or boards and eaten in a few bites. They may be skewered on toothpicks, served on small pieces of bread or pastry, or placed on spoons.

Common cold hapjes include smoked fish such as salmon or herring, various cheeses, cured meats, marinated vegetables, olives, and miniature sandwiches or canapés. Warm varieties include bitterballen and kroketten (croquettes), mini-quiches, meatballs, and savory pastries. Vegetarian options such as falafel bites, halloumi skewers, or roasted vegetables are also common. Dipping sauces and condiments, such as mustard, aioli, or remoulade, are often paired with hapjes.

Hapjes are closely linked to the Dutch concept of the borrel, a social gathering accompanied by drinks, where a selection of hapjes is served to guests. The term hapje refers to a single bite, while hapjes can refer to a collection for a table or platter. They can be homemade or purchased ready-made from catering or supermarkets, offering versatile options for casual gatherings or formal receptions.
