Handlungstheoretische refers to approaches, theories, or analyses that center on human action and the reasons actors have for acting. The term is derived from Handlung (action, deed) and theoretisch (theoretical) and is used primarily in German-language philosophy and social sciences to characterize theories that explain social phenomena by reference to agents’ intentional actions rather than by structural conditions alone.

In practice, handlungstheoretische perspectives emphasize agency, motives, and intersubjective meanings. They seek to reconstruct why individuals act as they do, often employing interpretive methods (Verstehen) to understand actors’ reasons from their point of view. This stands in contrast to more mechanistic or purely functional explanations that explain behavior mainly through social structures, norms, or systemic constraints. Typical concerns include the distinction between instrumental (zweckrational), value-rational (wertrational), affectual, and traditional action, as well as how meanings are constructed and communicated in social contexts.

Historical roots are closely tied to Max Weber, whose theory of social action laid the groundwork for many handlungstheoretische approaches. Over time, scholars have extended the framework to various fields such as sociology, political science, and anthropology, applying action-centered analyses to topics ranging from everyday interactions to institutional processes.

Critiques of handlungstheoretische approaches often focus on potential overemphasis of rational agency and the risk of underappreciating structural or material influences.
