Handgeschöpftes

Handgeschöpftes is a German term used to describe objects produced by hand, with handgeschöpftes Papier being the most common reference. In papermaking, handgeschöpftes Papier denotes sheets formed manually rather than by mechanical processes.

Production involves pulping fibers, beating or refining the pulp, and suspending it in water. A mould and deckle are dipped into the vat to lift a thin fiber mat from the suspension; excess water drains away and the sheet is transferred to felt or textile layers for pressing and drying. The fiber source can be cotton rag, linen, wood pulp, or blends, and the composition affects texture, strength, and aging.

Characteristics include a natural deckle edge, variable surface textures from smooth to highly textured, and a wide range of thicknesses and weights. Handmade papers may be acid-free and highly pH-stable when made with appropriate binders; color ranges from bright white to natural ivory or colored. Because the sheets are formed individually, results vary between sheets, making each sheet somewhat unique.

Uses and significance: handmade papers are favored in art, calligraphy, watercolor painting, printmaking, bookbinding, and high-quality stationery. The craft supports traditional papermaking techniques and small-scale production and is valued for tactile quality and archival potential.
