HandFootMouthDisease, commonly known as Hand-Foot-Mouth disease (HFMD), is a contagious viral infection that typically affects infants and young children. It is characterized by fever, mouth sores, and a rash on the hands and feet. The illness is caused by several types of enteroviruses, most commonly coxsackievirus.

Symptoms usually appear within 3 to 6 days of infection and include fever, sore throat, loss of appetite, and malaise. Within a day or two of fever onset, painful sores develop in the mouth, often starting as small red spots that blister and then become ulcers. A non-itchy rash, typically on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, appears shortly after the mouth sores. This rash may also appear on the knees, elbows, buttocks, or genital area. In some cases, blisters may form.

HFMD is spread through direct contact with the virus, usually via an infected person's saliva, nasal secretions, blister fluid, or stool. It is most contagious during the first week of illness. The illness is generally mild and resolves on its own within 7 to 10 days without specific medical treatment. Management focuses on relieving symptoms, such as pain relievers for fever and mouth pain, and ensuring adequate fluid intake to prevent dehydration. There is no vaccine for HFMD. Good hygiene practices, such as frequent handwashing, are crucial in preventing its spread.
