Handþurrkarar, often called hand dryers, are electrical devices used to dry hands. They are commonly found in public restrooms as an alternative to paper towels. The basic principle of a hand dryer involves expelling heated air at high speed to evaporate water from the hands.

There are two main types of hand dryers: warm air dryers and jet dryers. Warm air dryers use a heating element to warm the air before blowing it onto the hands. This process can take longer than jet dryers. Jet dryers, on the other hand, use a high-velocity stream of unheated or slightly heated air to essentially "scrape" the water off the hands. These are generally faster and more energy-efficient.

The design of hand dryers has evolved significantly. Early models were bulky and noisy, but modern versions are often more compact, quieter, and incorporate features like HEPA filters to improve air quality. Some also feature automatic sensors that activate the dryer when hands are placed beneath it, enhancing hygiene by eliminating the need to touch a button.

Concerns regarding the hygiene of hand dryers have been raised, with some studies suggesting that they can disperse bacteria into the air. However, manufacturers and other research often counter these claims, highlighting the effectiveness of modern designs and the hygienic benefits of touchless operation. The choice between paper towels and hand dryers is often a subject of debate, with considerations including environmental impact, cost, and perceived hygiene.
