Haloze

Haloze is a hilly wine-growing region in eastern Slovenia. It forms part of the traditional Styrian lands and is currently included in the Drava Statistical Region. The landscape runs along the Drava River, comprising a belt of terraced hills between Ptuj and Ormož. The area is dotted with small villages, farmsteads, and extensive vineyards.

Geology and landscape: The terrain features rolling hills with a mix of vineyard terraces, meadows, and forests. Soils vary from rocky, calcareous to deeper alluvial deposits near the river, producing diverse growing conditions. The hills create microclimates that are favorable for viticulture and fruit growing.

Culture and heritage: Haloze is known for its wine-making tradition and traditional rural architecture. The landscape features numerous vineyard terraces and wayside chapels. Local festivals and wine-tasting events accompany harvests.

Administration and regional status: Haloze is part of the Drava Statistical Region and forms part of the larger Styrian cultural landscape. It is commonly visited for scenic drives and hiking, with wine routes guiding visitors through the hills and cellars.
