Halfvalue

HalfValue, usually encountered as half-value layer (HVL), is a term used in radiation physics and protection to describe the thickness of a material required to reduce the intensity of incident radiation by half. It is a key measure of shielding effectiveness and is commonly applied in X-ray, gamma-ray, and other radiological contexts.

For a monoenergetic beam, HVL is defined by the equation HVL = ln(2)/μ, where μ is the linear attenuation coefficient of the shielding material at the radiation energy. In practice, many beams are polyenergetic, so the HVL is energy-dependent and often determined from measurements, data tables, or computational models that account for the beam spectrum and material composition.

HVL depends on several factors: the energy of the radiation, the material’s atomic number and density, and the specific shielding material. Materials with higher atomic numbers and densities generally produce smaller HVLs for the same energy, meaning they are more effective per unit thickness.

Applications of the HVL concept include designing shielding for X-ray rooms, laboratories, and nuclear facilities; selecting appropriate materials for medical imaging suites; and evaluating beam quality and shielding needs in radiation therapy and industrial radiography. HVL is frequently used alongside related measures such as the tenth-value layer (TVL) to characterize shielding performance across a range of energies.

Notes: The term HalfValue is distinct from half-life, which describes radioactive decay. In shielding practice, HVL is often expressed in units of thickness, such as millimeters of lead (mm Pb) or centimeters of concrete, and is accompanied by energy-specific data for accurate design.
