Halállományt

Halállományt is a term used in Hungarian to describe a collective noun for dead or dying trees within a forest ecosystem. It refers to the standing dead wood or trees that are in the process of succumbing to disease, insect infestation, natural aging, or environmental damage. The presence of halállományt is a natural and often vital component of forest dynamics.

These dead trees, whether standing (snags) or fallen, provide essential habitat and resources for a wide range of wildlife. Insects, fungi, and other decomposers colonize the decaying wood, initiating the nutrient cycling process and returning essential elements to the soil. Many bird species, such as woodpeckers, rely on snags for nesting cavities and foraging for insects. Mammals may use hollowed-out trees for shelter or den sites.

While a certain level of halállományt is beneficial and indicative of a healthy, dynamic forest, excessive amounts can sometimes signal underlying ecological stress or management issues.
