Haki

Haki is a term used in the fictional world of the manga and anime One Piece to describe a set of supernatural abilities that are distinct from Devil Fruit powers. It refers to the manifestation of spiritual energy that a person can use in various ways to affect themselves, weapons, or others. Haki is presented as a universally possible, though relatively rare, power that can be developed through training, will, and experience.

There are three main forms of Haki commonly recognized in the series. Kenbunshoku Haki, or Observation Haki, allows a user to sense the presence, emotions, and intent of others, and in advanced cases to predict an opponent’s moves. Busoshoku Haki, or Armament Haki, lets a user harden parts of the body or weapons with spiritual energy, increasing offense and defense, and enabling harm to opponents whose bodies are protected by their own Devil Fruit abilities. Haoshoku Haki, or Conqueror’s Haki, is a rarer form that grants the ability to exert one’s will over weaker beings, sometimes rendering them unconscious.

Acquisition of Haki is framed as something that can be learned and strengthened through discipline, training, and strong will. Not all characters can use Haki, and proficiency varies by individual. Haki can be used in combination with a character’s existing abilities, and it plays a central role in many battles and plot developments within the series.

In reception, Haki is a core concept that informs combat strategy and character development, and it has become a recognizable element of One Piece lore.
