Hajtótengelyek, often translated as drive shafts or prop shafts, are mechanical components used to transmit torque and rotation from a power source, such as an engine or motor, to a driven component, such as a wheel, axle, or gear. They are typically long, cylindrical shafts made from strong materials like steel or aluminum to withstand the forces they transmit.

The primary function of a hajtótengely is to bridge the distance between the power unit and the driven mechanism, allowing for flexibility in their placement and design. This is particularly important in vehicles, where the engine is often mounted separately from the wheels. In automotive applications, hajtótengelyek are crucial for transferring power from the transmission to the differential, which then distributes it to the wheels.

Hajtótengelyek often incorporate universal joints or constant velocity (CV) joints at their ends. These joints allow the shaft to operate at an angle, compensating for suspension movement and changes in alignment between the power source and the driven component.
