Haematocystin is a type of secondary metabolite produced by certain cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), particularly species within the genera *Anabaena*, *Aphanizomenon*, and *Nodularia*. These compounds belong to the broader class of hepatotoxins, which are toxic substances primarily affecting the liver. Haematocystin is structurally related to microcystins, another well-known group of cyanobacterial toxins, but it differs slightly in its chemical composition and toxicity profile.

The toxin is typically found in freshwater environments, often during algal blooms, where cyanobacteria proliferate rapidly under favorable conditions such as warm temperatures and nutrient enrichment.
