HERVWrelated
HERVWrelated refers to genetic elements, transcripts, and proteins associated with the human endogenous retrovirus family W (HERV-W). Endogenous retroviruses are remnants of ancient retroviral infections that became part of the human genome and are inherited across generations. The HERV-W family comprises multiple integrated sequences distributed across the genome, some of which encode functional proteins such as the envelope (Env) protein commonly referred to as Syncytin-1 (encoded by ERVW-1).
In normal physiology, Syncytin-1 plays a key role in placental development by mediating fusion of trophoblast
HERV-W–related expression has been investigated in various tissues and disease states. Elevated HERV-W Env expression has
Therapeutic and research approaches have targeted HERV-W Env, including the development of antibodies intended to neutralize
