HDMIUSB

HDMIUSB is a term used in consumer electronics to describe products and solutions that integrate HDMI interfaces with USB connectivity. It is not a formal standard; rather it denotes devices that enable the transport of HDMI video and audio signals across USB links or via USB-C connectors.

In practice, HDMIUSB appears mainly in two forms. HDMI-to-USB capture devices ingest an HDMI source—such as a camera, game console, or computer—and transmit the signal to a host over USB, often presenting as a USB Video Class (UVC) device suitable for livestreaming or recording. USB-C adapters and docks may also carry HDMI output from a device when the USB-C port supports a display alternate mode or HDMI-enabled connectivity.

Technical considerations include bandwidth, resolution, and latency. USB 3.x interfaces support higher resolutions (commonly 1080p at 60 Hz or 4K at 30 Hz) with lower latency, while USB 2.0-based devices may be limited to lower resolutions. Some units perform onboard encoding (H.264 or H.265) to reduce USB bandwidth and improve software compatibility.

Power delivery, EDID handling, and driver support are also relevant. HDMIUSB devices may require external power or draw from USB power, and may negotiate EDID to ensure correct timing. Compatibility depends on the host operating system’s support for UVC or vendor drivers and on the device’s ability to negotiate HDMI features with the source.
