The core of HAZOPelemzés involves a multidisciplinary team that scrutinizes the process design and operation using a series of guidewords applied to process parameters.

The guidewords, such as "no," "more," "less," "as well as," "part of," "reverse," and "other than," are combined with process parameters like flow, pressure, temperature, level, and composition. This combination helps identify potential deviations from the design intent. For each identified deviation, the team brainstorms potential causes, consequences, and existing safeguards. The goal is to uncover potential hazards that could lead to accidents, environmental damage, or significant operational problems, as well as operability issues that might hinder efficient and safe operation.

A HAZOPelemzés is typically conducted during the design phase of a new process or facility, but it is also valuable for existing plants, especially after modifications or when investigating incidents.
