Härtungsschritte refers to the steps involved in the hardening process of materials, typically metals. This process increases the hardness and strength of a material by altering its microstructure. The specific steps can vary depending on the material and the desired outcome, but generally involve heating the material to a specific temperature and then rapidly cooling it.

The initial stage is heating the metal to a temperature above its critical point. This temperature is where the metal's crystal structure transforms. For steels, this typically involves heating to a temperature where austenite is formed. Following the heating phase, the material undergoes rapid cooling, often referred to as quenching. This rapid cooling prevents the formation of softer microstructures, such as pearlite or ferrite, and instead promotes the formation of harder structures like martensite. The rate of cooling is crucial and depends on the material's composition and section thickness.

After quenching, the material is often subjected to a tempering process. Tempering involves reheating the hardened material to a temperature below its critical point and holding it there for a period before cooling. This step reduces the brittleness introduced by the rapid cooling and relieves internal stresses, thereby improving the toughness of the material while retaining a significant portion of its hardness. The tempering temperature and time dictate the final balance between hardness and toughness. Different combinations of heating, quenching, and tempering are employed to achieve specific mechanical properties for various applications.
