Gülen

Fethullah Gülen (born 1941) is a Turkish Islamic scholar and cleric whose followers established a transnational movement commonly known as Hizmet or the Gülen movement. He has lived in exile in the United States since 1999.

Gülen's thought blends religious faith with education, science, and interfaith dialogue. He advocates modern, moderate Islam and civic service over political confrontation, and his network promotes schooling, charitable work, media, and religious study across many countries.

The Gülen movement built a global network of schools, universities, foundations, and media outlets. It emphasizes merit, international exchange, and service learning, with activities in Turkey and dozens of other countries, though its exact organizational structure is complex and decentralized.

In Turkey, authorities have accused elements associated with the movement of infiltrating state institutions. After the 2016 coup attempt, the government labeled the movement as FETO (Fethullah Terrorist Organization) and carried out extensive legal actions against affiliated institutions and individuals. Gülen denies involvement and has expressed willingness to resolve disputes peacefully; the United States has not extradited him.

Globally, Gülen-linked groups continue to operate in some regions, subject to local regulations. The movement remains controversial: supporters view it as a civil society initiative promoting education and dialogue, while critics describe it as a secretive network with political influence.
