Gyújtáspozíció, often translated as ignition timing, refers to the precise moment within the internal combustion engine cycle when the spark plug ignites the air-fuel mixture in the cylinder. This timing is crucial for optimal engine performance, fuel efficiency, and emissions control. The ideal gyújtáspozíció is not a fixed point but varies depending on factors such as engine speed (RPM), engine load, and fuel type.

In gasoline engines, the spark plug ignites the mixture just before the piston reaches the top of its compression stroke (Top Dead Center, or TDC). This pre-ignition allows the flame front to propagate and build pressure, pushing the piston down with maximum force. If the ignition occurs too early, it can lead to knocking or pinging, a destructive phenomenon caused by premature combustion. If it occurs too late, power output and efficiency will be reduced.

Historically, gyújtáspozíció was controlled by mechanical distributors with centrifugal and vacuum advance mechanisms. Modern engines utilize sophisticated electronic control units (ECUs) that monitor various engine sensors and dynamically adjust the ignition timing in real-time.
