Gymnotiformlike is a term used in paleontology and evolutionary biology to describe fossil fish or other aquatic organisms that exhibit certain anatomical features reminiscent of gymnotiforms, a group of freshwater fish known for their electric organs. These characteristics might include a greatly elongated body, a reduced or absent dorsal fin, a prominent anal fin running along the ventral side, and possibly evidence of electroreceptive or electrogenic capabilities in extinct species.

The term is generally used when an organism shares some, but not all, of the defining traits of gymnotiforms, or when its phylogenetic placement is uncertain. It allows scientists to categorize and discuss these fossils based on observable similarities to a well-understood extant group, even if their exact evolutionary relationship remains unclear. For instance, a fossil fish with a long, eel-like body and a large anal fin might be described as gymnotiformlike if it lacks definitive features like the specific skeletal structures or fossilized electric organ tissues that would confirm it as a true gymnotiform.
