Gufufjörður

Gufufjörður is a fjord located in the Westfjords region of Iceland. It is situated on the southern coast of the Westfjords, north of the larger Breiðafjörður bay. The fjord is relatively narrow and extends inland for several kilometers. Its coastline is characterized by steep, often treeless slopes, typical of the Westfjords landscape.

The small settlement of Flateyri is located at the mouth of Gufufjörður. Flateyri is a fishing village and the primary community in the immediate vicinity of the fjord. Historically, the area has relied on fishing for its livelihood. The fjord's waters offer fishing grounds, and the sheltered nature of the fjord provides a harbor for local boats.

Access to Gufufjörður and Flateyri is primarily via a road that winds along the coastline. The remoteness of the Westfjords means that travel can be subject to weather conditions, especially during winter. The natural beauty of the area, including the fjord itself and its surrounding mountains, attracts some visitors, though it is not a major tourist destination compared to other parts of Iceland. The environment is harsh, with strong winds and a cool climate influencing the flora and fauna.
