GruppeID

GruppeID (group identifier) is a unique identifier assigned to a group within a computing or organizational context. It is used to identify the group's identity in access control decisions, policy assignments, and resource management. In German-language contexts, GruppeID mirrors the English term Group ID (GID).

In Unix-like systems, the GruppeID is the numeric value known as a GID and is stored in system databases such as /etc/group or in directory services. Typical ranges start at 1000 for user-created groups, while lower values are often reserved for system groups.

In LDAP and related directory services, groups can be represented in various ways; the gidNumber attribute is used in POSIX-compliant schemas, while directory platforms such as Active Directory use security identifiers (SIDs) rather than a simple GID. Some applications map GID to access control lists.

Role and permissions: A file's group owner and membership affect access rights according to the group portion of the file system's permission model. A user may belong to multiple groups, expanding resources they may access.

Management: Group creation and membership changes are performed by administrators through user management tools or directory services. Changes to GruppeID membership typically take effect immediately for new processes and files, though some applications require re-authentication.
