Grunnskólanámi

Grunnskólanámi refers to compulsory education in Iceland. It is a nine-year program typically attended by children aged 6 to 16. The system is designed to provide a comprehensive foundation in various subjects, aiming to equip students with essential knowledge and skills for future academic pursuits or entry into the workforce.

The curriculum is set by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture and includes core subjects such as Icelandic language, mathematics, English, social studies, natural sciences, physical education, music, art, and crafts. Special emphasis is placed on Icelandic language and culture. Students are generally taught in mixed-ability classrooms, though differentiation strategies are employed to cater to individual learning needs.

The primary goal of grunnskólanámi is to foster well-rounded individuals who are critical thinkers, creative problem-solvers, and responsible citizens. The educational philosophy promotes an inclusive environment where all students can thrive. Upon completion of grunnskólanámi, students receive a certificate and can then choose to continue their education in a secondary school (framhaldsskóli) or pursue vocational training.
