Großvenediger

Großvenediger is the highest mountain in the Venediger Group, a subdivision of the Hohe Tauern range in the Eastern Alps. Located in the Austrian state of Salzburg, it reaches an elevation of 3,666 meters (12,028 feet) above sea level. The mountain is a prominent ice-covered peak and is often referred to as the "King of the Hohe Tauern" due to its commanding presence.

The summit of Großvenediger is a large glacial plateau, making it a popular destination for mountaineers and ski tourers. Its relatively accessible glaciers and diverse climbing routes attract climbers of all levels. The first recorded ascent was made in 1841. The name "Großvenediger" translates to "Great Venetian," a name believed to derive from the legend that a Venetian king was buried on its summit, or possibly from the shimmering appearance of its snow and ice resembling Venetian stucco.

The surrounding area is part of the Hohe Tauern National Park, Austria's largest national park, which protects its unique alpine environment, diverse flora, and fauna. Glacial recession has been a significant concern in recent decades, impacting the mountain's iconic appearance and the surrounding glacial landscape. Despite this, Großvenediger remains a significant landmark and a symbol of the Austrian Alps.
