The term blends grammar with agnostics, signaling a focus on descriptive variation and uncertainty rather than fixed prescriptive norms.

Scope includes studying how writers produce grammatical choices across dialects and registers, identifying contested constructions, and describing judgments of grammaticality as probabilistic rather than absolute. It emphasizes the limits of universal rules and the role of context in shaping what counts as acceptable grammar.

Methods and tools combine corpus analysis, probabilistic or constraint-based grammars, and machine learning models that output confidence scores for grammatical constructions. Researchers may develop diagnostic criteria that capture ambiguity or variation, and editors or software may annotate texts with levels of grammatical certainty.

Applications span education, editing and localization, forensic linguistics, and natural language processing, particularly in handling uncertain grammar in multilingual or low-resource contexts.
