Grahana

Grahana is a Sanskrit term commonly translated as "eclipse" in English. It refers to the astronomical phenomenon where one celestial body obscures another, either partially or totally. In the context of Indian astronomy and astrology, grahana specifically refers to solar eclipses (Surya Grahan) and lunar eclipses (Chandra Grahan).

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, casting a shadow on Earth. A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth passes between the Sun and Moon, blocking the Sun's light from reaching the Moon. These events have been observed and documented across many cultures throughout history.

In Hindu traditions, grahana are often viewed with a mix of scientific observation and religious significance. Ancient Indian astronomers possessed sophisticated knowledge of celestial movements and accurately predicted eclipses. Astrologically, grahana are considered significant events that can influence individual lives and worldly affairs. Certain rituals and practices are often observed during these periods, such as abstaining from eating and performing prayers.
