Graftmaterialer refer to substances used in medical procedures to replace or repair damaged tissue. These materials can be sourced from the patient themselves (autograft), from another individual of the same species (allograft), from a different species (xenograft), or be entirely synthetic. The choice of graft material depends on the specific application, such as bone grafting, skin grafting, or vascular grafts.

Autografts are considered the gold standard when available, as they eliminate the risk of immune rejection. However, their use is limited by the availability of donor tissue. Allografts, often sourced from cadavers, are readily available but require immunosuppressive therapy to prevent rejection. Xenografts, typically from animals like pigs, also carry a risk of rejection and potential transmission of diseases. Synthetic graft materials, made from polymers or metals, offer a sterile and readily available option, but may have issues with biocompatibility and long-term durability.

In dentistry, bone graft materials are frequently used to augment alveolar bone for dental implants or to reconstruct bone defects. These can be autografts (harvested from the patient's own body), allografts (human donor bone), xenografts (animal-derived bone), or alloplasts (synthetic materials). The goal is to provide a scaffold for new bone growth and to promote healing.

The field of graft materials is continually evolving, with ongoing research focused on developing biomimetic materials that better integrate with the host tissue and promote regeneration. This includes advancements in tissue engineering and the use of growth factors to enhance graft performance.
