Gotemba

Gotemba is a city in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. It lies at the eastern foot of Mount Fuji, about 100 kilometers southwest of Tokyo, and offers views of the mountain from several points in the city. The JR Gotemba Line provides rail access to nearby cities, and the city is connected to the national highway network via the Tomei Expressway (Gotemba Interchange) and major route numbers.

The local economy centers on tourism, agriculture, and light industry. The Gotemba Premium Outlets, opened in the 2000s, is one of Japan’s largest outlet shopping centers and a major draw for visitors from the Kanto region and beyond. The surrounding rural areas are known for fruit orchards, vineyards and tea farms; onsen resorts are common in the wider area, supporting hospitality businesses.

As of the late 2010s, the city’s population is around the 90,000–100,000 range. Gotemba developed as a gateway for Mount Fuji visitors and has continued to attract tourists with its panoramic views, access to nature, and nearby attractions. The city also emphasizes regional culture, with parks, museums and community events that reflect its rural heritage and ties to Mount Fuji.
