Gorinchem

Gorinchem is a city and municipality in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands. It lies on the Oude Rijn (Old Rhine) and is situated about 15 kilometres north of Rotterdam and 30 kilometres south of Utrecht. The municipality covers an area of approximately 56 square kilometres and had a population of around 41,000 inhabitants as of 2023. The postal code range for Gorinchem is 4451–4459.

Historically, Gorinchem was founded in the 12th century and grew into an important inland trading centre. In 1152 the city received its charter, and its strategic position on the Rhine made it a key point in the Dutch Water Line, a historic defence system that protected the Netherlands from the south. The historic city centre still retains its medieval walls and a number of fortified bastions, notably the Fort Bokrijk, which now houses the National Military Museum.

The Rijnhaven and Molensteeg canals form the core of the old town, and the city’s skyline is dominated by the tall 1798 tower of the Dutch Reformed Church on the Grote Kerkplein. The nearby Gienmar Houses (Gienmarhuis) are built from pure white brick and illustrate classic 17th‑century Dutch architecture.

Gorinchem is known for its cultural heritage. The Gorinchem Arts Festival, held annually, draws performers from across Europe. The city also hosts the annual music event “Gorinchem Sound”, featuring local and international artists. In motorsports, the 12th edition of the Dutch Grand Prix in 2004 was held near the town, marking the first time a Grand Prix raced at a non‑street circuit in the Netherlands.

Transport links include the A16 motorway and a railway station on the Amsterdam–Rotterdam line, providing quick access to major Dutch cities. Local bus services connect Gorinchem to surrounding towns and rural areas.

Notable figures from Gorinchem include painter Jan van Haidt, architect H. Bosman, and mathematician Johannes de Leeuw. The city continues to celebrate its historic legacy while fostering a modern, prosperous community.
