Goniometrists apply these measurements to assess function, mobility, and rehabilitation needs across clinical and research settings.

Key activities include determining range of motion at major joints, tracking changes over time, and contributing data for diagnosis and treatment planning. Measurements are obtained with devices such as universal goniometers or digital inclinometers, and increasingly by smartphone apps. The procedure typically involves identifying anatomical landmarks, aligning the instrument’s axis with the joint’s center, and recording the angle of a stationary and a moving body segment. Reliability depends on proper technique and consistent landmark identification, with attention to inter- and intra-rater consistency.
