Glükóztolerancia

Glükóztolerancia refers to the body's ability to process and regulate blood glucose levels after consuming carbohydrates. A healthy individual's body efficiently responds to glucose intake by releasing insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas. Insulin facilitates the uptake of glucose from the bloodstream into cells for energy or storage.

Impaired glucose tolerance is a condition where the body's response to glucose is not optimal. This means that blood sugar levels remain higher than normal for a prolonged period after eating. It is often considered a pre-diabetic state, indicating an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Factors contributing to impaired glucose tolerance include genetics, obesity, physical inactivity, and age.

Diagnosing glucose tolerance typically involves an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). During this test, a person fasts overnight and then drinks a sugary solution. Blood glucose levels are measured at intervals, usually two hours, after consuming the drink. Elevated blood glucose levels during the OGTT suggest impaired glucose tolerance.

Management of impaired glucose tolerance often focuses on lifestyle modifications. These include adopting a healthy diet with controlled carbohydrate intake, regular physical activity, and weight management. These changes can help improve insulin sensitivity and bring blood glucose levels back into a normal range, thereby reducing the risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes.
